Pregnancy and Vaginal Health: How to Stay Comfortable Down There
Pregnancy – a period full of changes, emotions, and… well, unexpected sprints to the toilet and taste alterations.
But you know what? Even with all these changes, some things remain the same.
And among them is proper care for the vagina. Let’s take a look together at how to maintain comfort and vaginal health during pregnancy.

Hormonal Roller Coaster and Microbiome
Yes, the microbiome again! But as we know, repetition is the mother of wisdom. Hormonal changes during pregnancy affect the vaginal environment and the bacteria residing in it, known as the vaginal microbiome. These changes can lead to an imbalance, increasing the risk of vaginal infection. It’s crucial to monitor these changes and protect the acidic pH.

MUDr. Kristýna Koutná
Dr. Kristýna Koutná explains, “Another issue is that the cervix is the only thing separating the fetus in the amniotic sac from the environment in the vagina, and consequently, infections. The vagina is certainly not a sterile environment. However, I would like to add that pregnancy is not an illness; it is a different state. Therefore, the cervix has mechanisms to prevent infection from reaching the baby. When it does occur, though, it is riskier than in non-pregnant women, so it needs to be approached with caution.”
Sugars are not Friends
We all know it, sweet treats are a big temptation… But during pregnancy, it’s good to limit sugar. Excessive intake of sweets can disrupt the vaginal balance and promote unwanted yeast that cause fungal infections.
Not all discharges are equal
Not all changes in discharge should be reason to panic. But how to recognize when something is wrong? The Rule of three ”NOT”s applies here: it’s NOT itching, it’s NOT burning, it’s NOT smelling. Then everything should be fine, even if your underwear is wet or if the discharge is white or slightly yellowish.
What to do if it does itch, burn, or smell bad? You’ll find out in the next installment of the Vagina Stories series by Ženy s.r.o.
