Yeast Infection of the Penis is Often an Overlooked Issue
A yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is one of the most common causes of penis redness. Although it’s often thought of as a female issue, yeast infections on the penis are common.
In both men and women, Candidiasis is caused by the yeast Candida albicans, which can lead to redness, itching, and soreness. “In men, symptoms of a yeast infection may only appear in certain cases, and usually after a longer period. As a result, many are unaware of their condition,” explains gynecologist MUDr. Kristýna Koutná.
Men at Risk of Fungal Infections
Men are at higher risk if they:
- Use antibiotics,
- Have diabetes,
- Have a tight foreskin (phimosis),
- Suffer from weakened immunity.
Transmission of Yeast Infections Between Partners
Yeast infections in men can be transmitted to their partners and vice versa. This repeated transmission between sexual partners is referred to as the “ping-pong effect.” Therefore, it is recommended that both partners undergo treatment or check-ups to avoid recurrence.
Yeast Infection, Treatment, and Men
If redness, itching, burning, or pain occurs, don’t ignore it. “An untreated infection can spread to the groin area, testicles, and scrotal skin,” explains MUDr. Koutná. Early treatment can prevent complications. Over-the-counter products, such as creams containing antimicrobial silver (e.g., Andryll), can relieve symptoms within days or weeks. The cream is applied twice a day to the glans.
However, if the redness, itching, and burning persist, visit a doctor to rule out a bacterial infection or viral illness like herpes. “For diagnosed yeast infections, oral antifungal medications may be prescribed, and sexual abstinence for two weeks is advised,” adds MUDr. Kristýna Koutná.
Proper Hygiene of the Penis and Other Tips to Prevent Yeast Infections
Although yeast infections are relatively easy to treat, it is advisable to reduce the risk of developing them. Good hygiene habits and wearing loose clothing can help prevent these issues.
Additional Tips for Prevention:
- Wash the penis 1-2 times a day, paying special attention to the foreskin, where smegma (a white substance) can accumulate and, if not removed, cause adhesions.
- Choose shower instead of hot baths, during which the urethra can widen, allowing bacteria from the water to enter more easily.
- Avoid shower gels that cause irritation.
- Use natural fabric softeners when washing clothes.
- Replace tight underwear with looser clothing, and avoid synthetic materials.
