What to Prepare Before the Exam
Write down a list of questions you want to ask the doctor. These might include questions about your menstrual cycle, contraception, or any issues that are bothering you.
Prepare information about your medical history, including any family medical issues. Particularly important is the history of your mother, grandmother, and siblings, especially any serious illnesses such as cervical or breast cancer.
An annual preventive exam is covered by public health insurance and is free of charge. Some practices, especially in Prague, may charge a fee for registration or for using disposable examination speculums. It is best to check the clinic’s policies in advance.
What to Bring with You
Bring your insurance card and, if applicable, a list of medications you are taking.
Take a menstrual calendar or at least the start and end dates of your last period. The doctor will ask about this.
Wear something comfortable that is easy to take off and put on. Loose skirts or dresses that you can pull up before the exam are ideal. Alternatively, pants and a long shirt will also work.
We also recommend bringing unscented wet wipes for a quick refresh before the exam.
What to Expect During Your First Gynecology Visit
The first part of the visit involves a conversation with the doctor about your health and menstrual cycle. The doctor will ask about the length and regularity of your cycle and any potential issues.
Then you will undress the lower half of your body. The clinic is equipped with a changing room where you can leave your clothes. The doctor will then conduct a basic physical examination, which may include blood pressure measurement, weighing, and breast examination.
The actual gynecological exam is performed while lying down and focuses on the reproductive organs. The doctor examines visually and by palpation, with one hand in the vagina and the other on the abdomen, and checks the cervix using speculums. A pap smear (cytology) and an ultrasound examination are then performed. The results of the pap smear are usually provided within 1-2 weeks.
If the woman has not had sexual intercourse, a colposcopy or pap smear is not performed. The ultrasound is done through the abdomen.
First Gynecologist Visit and Shaving
There is no need to shave before visiting the gynecologist. The doctor encounters various situations and is there to take care of your health, not to judge your appearance. Just perform regular hygiene.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I visit the gynecologist for the first time?
The first exam should take place around the age of 15 or when sexual activity begins. It is important to start regular check-ups early to prevent potential problems.
Do I need a referral for the exam?
No, you just need to schedule an appointment with the doctor who has availability.
Will the first gynecological exam be painful?
A gynecological exam may be uncomfortable, but it is not painful. It is important to try to alleviate your fears. Remember that it is about your health, so try to relax.
First gynecologist visit as a virgin. What should I expect?
If you have not had sexual intercourse, inform your gynecologist. The exam will be adapted to make it as comfortable as possible. The doctor may perform an external examination and possibly an abdominal ultrasound if needed. Colposcopy or a pap smear is not performed for women who have not started sexual activity.
How often should I visit the gynecologist if I don’t have a partner?
Whether or not you have a partner does not affect the frequency of check-ups. A woman should have a preventive exam once a year. You can also schedule an appointment if you have any concerns.
